Key facts for Slovakia buyers, as of October 2026
— Duty depends on the machine's live tariff line and qualifying origin; the specified code examples range from 0% to 7% before any valid preference.
— Slovak import VAT is 23%, and self-accounting is a conditional statutory route rather than an automatic option.
— A used GB machine's CE history and Slovak-language instructions must be settled for that unit.
— Plant-health control depends on the exact code, past use and first-entry arrangement.
— A tractor or working machine may need individual recognition or approval according to its category and use.
— Seller export evidence and any charged-air-conditioning control must be agreed before shipment.
Sources are listed at the end of this guide. Your own customs agent and the relevant authorities must settle the machine-specific questions before you buy.
Where should a UK machine be cleared for Slovakia?
Start with the first European Union entry point and the intended end of any transit. As of October 2026, Slovak law places importation in the Member State where goods enter the EU, or, under external transit, where that procedure ends. A Slovak delivery address alone does not decide the import jurisdiction.
A machine from Great Britain can be imported at first entry or move under an agreed external-transit plan. Name the importer, declarant, customs office and transit destination before freight is booked. The buyer's customs agent should document the route and responsibility for closing any procedure.
Slovakia's listed plant-health border posts are not on the normal journey from Great Britain. A regulated machine would ordinarily be checked at the first suitable EU entry point, but the actual border control post and any controlled onward movement are route-specific.
Machinery already in EU circulation follows a different customs and seller-VAT route. Ask the seller to state the invoice scheme and have the buyer's tax adviser review the actual transaction. Do not infer origin, VAT treatment or customs status from the seller's address alone.
Put the agreed route at the top of the machine file. Show where the stock is, where the declaration is expected and where external transit will end. If any of those details changes, pause the freight booking and have the customs agent revisit the decision.
Keep the plant-health route beside the customs route rather than treating it as a later transport detail. A first-entry control decision can change the suitable crossing and onward plan. The forwarder should work from the written answers given by the customs agent and first-entry authority.
Settle clearance before collection. The customs and plant-health plans must point to the same first entry, declaration and onward movement.
What should I confirm before buying used machinery for Slovakia?
Build the purchase file around the serial number. For the October 2026 position, record the importer, buyer status, proposed ten-digit code, claimed origin, location and intended work. Add the CE plate, Declaration of Conformity, engine plate, Slovak instructions, air-conditioning details and road-use plan.
Record whether the machine has worked in agriculture or forestry. The exact code and that use history matter together for plant-health scope. Code 8701 30 needs particular care because the recorded sources conflict.
Keep the seller's invoice treatment and export evidence in the same review. A UK VAT-registered seller may zero-rate an export only when the goods leave the UK and valid export evidence is held within 3 months of the time of supply. The seller may require a VAT deposit while waiting for evidence.
Before you choose a seller, compare the risk and work involved in using a buying agent or buying direct. Check the seller independently before any money moves.
Use one decision table for the customs, tax, conformity, plant-health and road-use questions. Put the evidence supplied, person answering and date beside each point. Treat an answer as complete only when it identifies the machine and the intended Slovak route.
Keep the make, model, serial and proposed code identical across the invoice request, inspection brief and adviser questions. If the seller substitutes a machine or attachment, reopen the decisions that depended on the earlier configuration. Do not carry a rate or approval answer from one unit to another.
What duty and Slovak import VAT apply to used machinery?
Use the exact code before using a percentage. As of October 2026, ISZTAR4 shows 0% third-country duty and 0% GB preference on code 8429 52 10 00 for a track-laying excavator. It shows 4.5% third-country duty and 0% GB preference on 8427 10 90 00 and 8427 20 11 00 for forklifts and telehandlers.
Other examples include 1.7% on 8436 80 forestry machinery, 2.7% on specified 8502 generator codes and 7% on 8701 94 90 tractors. These examples do not classify the machine being offered.
Any preference still depends on qualifying UK origin and acceptable proof. Buying from a British seller is not proof of origin. Give the customs agent the make, model, serial, configuration and origin material, then obtain the live ten-digit code, measures and evidence requirement.
Slovakia's standard VAT rate is 23%, and the statutory reduced-rate goods list does not contain the machinery lines covered here. The import-VAT base is customs value plus duties and incidental costs such as commission, packing, transport and insurance to the first place of destination, with known onward transport also included.
Import-VAT self-accounting under section 84a is conditional. It requires the statutory VAT-registration, establishment or centralised-clearance conditions and authorised economic operator status. Liability through this route applies to imports arising after 30 June 2025.
Ask the Slovak tax adviser and customs agent whether the importer satisfies every condition. If it does not, plan the ordinary payment route instead of building the purchase around self-accounting.
Keep the purchase price, transport, insurance, packing and other service lines visible for the VAT review. Ask which figures belong in the customs value or import-VAT base for the actual route. Do not turn a published code example or proposed invoice into a landed-cost promise.
Keep classification, preference and VAT separate. The code determines which measures are tested, origin and proof support preference, and the importer's facts decide whether the conditional VAT route is available.
Does a used GB machine need CE marking and Slovak instructions?
Age and earlier British use are not complete answers. As of October 2026, EU product law can apply to used equipment imported from a third country when it enters the Union market for the first time. The reach of Withdrawal Agreement Article 41 and the correct evidence for a particular GB-used machine remain fact-specific.
A machinery importer must supply instructions for use and safety information in Slovak. Machinery market surveillance is carried out by the Slovak Trade Inspection and, for equipment put into service by employers, the labour inspectorate.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies on a mandatory basis from 20 January 2027. Give the market-surveillance authority, manufacturer and customs agent the placing history, CE evidence, declaration and Slovak instructions before asking for a written decision.
The non-road-engine approval, transition, tractor and replacement provisions for the actual used GB machine are not settled. Ask the manufacturer, competent authority and buyer's customs agent to decide the engine route from the machine and engine serials.
ISZTAR4 displays an F-gas import-control measure on several common machinery lines. The requirements for a used machine with charged cab air-conditioning depend on its refrigerant, equipment and importer. The customs agent and competent authority should settle any portal, quota, declaration or service requirement before payment.
Keep the machine, engine, language and air-conditioning decisions on separate lines. A satisfactory answer on one does not settle the others. Record the authority or manufacturer responsible for each answer, then give the complete set to the customs agent before collection is authorised.
A pre-purchase inspection should match the serial, plates and condition to the documents before you commit. It can test whether the supplied evidence belongs to the offered unit, but it does not replace an authority's admission decision.
Does used farm or forestry machinery need plant-health clearance?
Check code and use history together. As of October 2026, ISZTAR4 displays official plant control on specified codes under 8432, 8433, 8436 and 8701. Both the exact code and agricultural or forestry use history must be settled for the actual machine.
On 23 October 2026, ISZTAR4 did not display an official plant-control measure on the specified 8429, 8427, 8426, 8474 and 8502 codes. A soiled or differently classified machine still needs a machine-specific check.
The sources conflict on code 8701 30. The Swedish authority's list includes it from 15 October 2026, while ISZTAR4 showed no official plant-control measure for that code on 23 October 2026. Do not choose between those records in the purchase file.
Ask ÚKSÚP and the first-entry plant-health authority in writing whether the exact machine is regulated. The forwarder, customs agent and authority should also settle the border control post, pre-notification and any controlled onward movement.
Do not treat a clean appearance as a tariff or use-history answer. Give the authority the proposed code, serial and written account of earlier work. Keep its response with any entry instructions so the carrier and declarant are following the same scope decision.
UK and European machines can differ in specification and documentation, so compare the source market as well as the asking price. Keep the use-history answer with the serial and proposed code.
Must a tractor or mobile working machine be approved in Slovakia?
Road use is a separate question from customs release. As of October 2026, Slovak law includes category P working machines and category T tractors. An operator of an individually imported vehicle must apply for individual recognition or approval.
That framework does not show that every off-road machine follows the same process. Give the competent district office or transport authority the make, model, serial, intended road use and available papers. Ask it to specify category, approval, inspection and registration before purchase.
Keep the written answer with the machine file. A customs, conformity or plant-health decision does not replace the approval decision for intended public-road use.
What export and customs checks belong in the transport plan?
Name the declarant and electronic-filing route early. As of October 2026, an economic operator not established in the EU registers for EORI in the Member State where it first performs the relevant customs operation. Slovak guidance separately records natural persons in the central register.
Slovak customs declarations can be lodged electronically through the trader workdesk or commercial software. The government service tells filers to prepare a qualified electronic signature and smart-card reader. The buyer's customs agent should state who files, which system is used and how any transit is closed.
On the UK side, agree the seller's invoice treatment, exporter, evidence and any VAT deposit before payment. Match the invoice, serial number, collection record and export evidence to the same machine.
Give the forwarder the exact dimensions, weight, attachments and loading condition. Ask for written current route, schedule, acceptance, permit and insurance terms, without relying on a published frequency. Align that transport answer with the first-entry and transit plan.
The handover note should name who releases the machine, who receives the export evidence and who tells the carrier that customs and any plant-health control are ready. Keep the movement documents under the same serial number.
Pre-purchase checklist
Before you commit to used machinery for Slovakia:
— Name the importer, customs agent and intended place where external transit will end.
— Give the agent the machine identity, proposed ten-digit code and origin evidence.
— Check whether the importer meets every condition for import-VAT self-accounting.
— Obtain the CE plate, declaration, Slovak instructions, engine plate and air-conditioning details.
— Record agricultural or forestry use and obtain the authority's exact-code, entry-post and pre-notification answer.
— Ask the competent office about category, approval, inspection and registration.
— Agree the UK seller's export-VAT evidence or the EU seller's invoice scheme.
— Give the forwarder the measured dimensions and obtain current route, acceptance, permit and insurance terms.
Put every answer beside the serial number and proposed invoice. If the machine, importer or route changes, send the revised facts back to the parties who made the earlier decisions.

How do I import used machinery from the UK to Slovakia?
As of October 2026, identify the importer and decide whether the goods will clear at first EU entry or move under external transit to Slovakia. Give the buyer's customs agent the serial details, proposed ten-digit code, origin evidence and route. Settle duty, VAT, conformity, engine, plant-health and approval questions before payment. Machinery already in EU circulation follows a different customs and seller-VAT route, so do not apply the Great Britain plan to every machine.
How much duty and VAT will I pay on used machinery in Slovakia?
As of October 2026, Slovakia's standard VAT rate is 23%. Published duty examples range from 0% to 7%, but each belongs to a specified code and does not classify your machine. Any GB preference depends on qualifying UK origin and proof. The import-VAT base includes customs value, duties and specified incidental costs. Ask the customs agent for the live classification and origin decision, and check whether the importer satisfies every condition for Slovak import-VAT self-accounting.
Can I self-account for Slovak import VAT?
Only when the statutory conditions are met. As of October 2026, Slovak section 84a requires the relevant VAT registration, establishment or centralised-clearance conditions and authorised economic operator status. Liability through that route applies to imports arising after 30 June 2025. The ordinary payment route remains relevant when those conditions are not met. Give the importer details and planned place of importation to the Slovak tax adviser and customs agent before relying on self-accounting.
Does a used excavator from Britain need CE marking and engine approval?
Age or previous work in Britain does not settle the answer. As of October 2026, EU product law can apply when used equipment from a third country enters the Union market for the first time. The importer must supply instructions and safety information in Slovak, and Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 becomes mandatory on 20 January 2027. The engine route is not settled, and charged-air-conditioning requirements remain machine-specific, so ask the manufacturer, authority and customs agent to review the actual evidence.
Does used agricultural machinery need a phytosanitary certificate for Slovakia?
It depends on the exact code and agricultural or forestry use. As of October 2026, ISZTAR4 displays plant control on specified codes under 8432, 8433, 8436 and 8701, while it did not display a control on the specified 8429, 8427, 8426, 8474 and 8502 codes. Sources conflict on code 8701 30. Ask ÚKSÚP and the first-entry authority to settle scope, the border control post and any controlled onward movement for the actual machine.
Must a tractor or working machine be approved in Slovakia?
The route depends on the actual category and use. For the October 2026 position, Slovak law includes category P working machines and category T tractors. An operator of an individually imported vehicle must apply for individual recognition or approval, but that does not show that every off-road machine enters the same process. Give the competent district office or transport authority the machine identity and intended road use, then ask it to specify approval, inspection and registration requirements before purchase.
Can Euro Plant Finder handle Slovak customs clearance?
Euro Plant Finder works on the sourcing and export side. We find machinery in the UK and Europe, check the seller, arrange inspection and coordinate the available machine information, export documents and freight interface. The buyer's own customs agent files the Slovak import declaration and clears the machine. Slovak and first-entry authorities decide customs, conformity, plant-health and approval questions. We keep the seller and transport parties aligned with the information those advisers request.
