Sources are listed at the end of this guide. Rules and rates change: confirm the ones that matter for your machine with your own clearing agent before you commit.

Can heavy machinery ship from the UK to the UAE now?

Start with a named service that can accept your machine. As of October 2026, Maersk's Middle East operational update 51 accepts dry-container imports to Khor Fakkan and Jebel Ali via a landbridge. The same update suspends all out-of-gauge bookings to and from the UAE, including Khor Fakkan.

Hapag-Lloyd's Upper Gulf bookings page describes special cargo as in-gauge only and does not list out-of-gauge support. Ask your forwarder to re-read the carrier's current notice and obtain written acceptance for the unit before booking.

For roll-on/roll-off (RoRo), Wallenius Wilhelmsen's 4 March 2026 notice temporarily suspended all sailings to the region. Its EMEA service-update page showed no resumption notice when checked on 23 October 2026. The cited NYK RoRo schedule is US-origin and marked “service suspended until further notice”; it does not establish a UK-to-UAE service.

Do not treat these notices as a permanent answer for every carrier. Have the forwarder confirm a named RoRo carrier, sailing, port and acceptance if that is the proposed method. For the importer, tariff and approval checks around the shipment, start with the full UAE machinery-import guide.

Does the machine fit a standard container or need a specialist route?

Measure before choosing the freight method. For the October 2026 carrier position, container fit must be established from the machine's plate dimensions and weight. Its advertised type is not enough. Ask the seller for the transport configuration, measurements and weight, including the details of any parts proposed for removal.

Give the forwarder photographs alongside the measurements. Ask it to check the actual container's door, payload and securing limits. Do not label every flat-rack load out-of-gauge yourself; leave the carrier classification to the forwarder and carrier. Keep the written answer tied to the configuration that will actually leave the seller.

Fuel or a battery may change dangerous-goods treatment, and Maersk's update makes acceptance dependent on capacity and protocol. The carrier or forwarder should confirm dangerous-goods status, permitted fuel level, battery treatment and container limits together.

Use a pre-purchase inspection to capture plate dimensions, serial details and condition before fixing the freight plan. If the loading proposal changes, send the revised description back to the forwarder. Do not ask it to accept one configuration and then arrange collection of another.

Which UAE port and emirate route applies?

Write down the final emirate as well as the arrival port. As of October 2026, Dubai Customs Notice 03/2026 provides temporary secure bonded road movement for containers arriving at Khorfakkan or Fujairah. It covers onward movement to Jebel Ali Port and Dubai free zones.

Under that notice, the shipping line files the road-leg manifest and issues the delivery order. The consignee files the import declaration and clears the goods before release. Put those responsibilities alongside the forwarder's proposed route, so each party can see where its work starts.

That temporary Dubai arrangement does not establish an equivalent bonded route to another emirate or for a non-containerised machine. A proposed Abu Dhabi destination therefore needs its own answer. The buyer's clearing agent and relevant emirate customs authority must confirm the current movement and declaration path for the shipment.

Ask for the route in one written description, from the UK departure through the arrival port to the named destination. Mark any unanswered hand-off and send it to the party responsible. The UAE machinery document guide explains how to organise the associated paperwork.

What must the forwarder confirm in writing?

Ask for acceptance of your unit, not just a general service description. For October 2026 bookings, carrier acceptance, port, surcharges and war-risk cover still need shipment-specific answers. A notice describing a service cannot settle the actual machine's routing or insurance. Get written unit-specific acceptance from the forwarder and written cover from the cargo insurer immediately before booking.

Put the proposed carrier, cargo classification, port, onward route and destination together. Attach the same photographs and measurements used for the container assessment. Ask the insurer to address the proposed route and exclusions explicitly. Keep its reply with the forwarder's acceptance, rather than relying on a verbal assurance passed between the parties.

The UK seller's tax treatment needs a separate conversation. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) permits a UK VAT-registered seller to zero-rate an export only if the goods leave the UK and valid evidence is held within three months of the time of supply. The seller and its tax adviser should confirm invoice or deposit treatment and acceptable export evidence before payment.

Work backwards from those written answers when agreeing collection. Ask each party to identify any remaining action and who will complete it. Keep a change in machine configuration, port or onward destination visible to everyone involved before committing to the revised plan.

Pre-purchase shipping checklist

Use the checks above before agreeing a machine or freight booking.

— Obtain plate dimensions, transport weight and removable-part dimensions from the seller.

— Give the forwarder photographs, fuel and battery details, and request written dangerous-goods treatment.

— Obtain a named carrier, port, route and written acceptance for the actual unit.

— Ask the insurer for the cargo and war-risk cover, exclusions and route immediately before booking.

— Have your clearing agent settle the destination-emirate movement and import-declaration path.

— Agree the UK seller's export-evidence and invoice treatment before payment.

Keep these answers together and check that they describe the same machine. If a reply refers only to “plant” or “equipment”, ask for the unit details to be added. Use the UAE construction market page to discuss the machine you want sourced in the UK or Europe.

Working with a buying agent who already does this

Euro Plant Finder finds machinery in the UK and Europe, checks the seller and arranges inspection. We coordinate origin, condition, cleaning and export documents with the seller and forwarder. Your own UAE clearing agent handles the import declaration and clearance, and we work with that agent on the export-side hand-off.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ship an excavator from the UK to the UAE now?

Start with the actual excavator's dimensions, weight and transport configuration. As of October 2026, Maersk documents dry-container options but suspends UAE out-of-gauge bookings. A RoRo route needs written acceptance from a named carrier for the unit and sailing. Ask your forwarder to check container limits, fuel and battery treatment, then obtain the proposed port and route in writing. Get the cargo insurer's answer for that same route before committing.

Does a machine need to fit inside a shipping container?

Do not assume the machine's type decides its shipping method. As of October 2026, dry-container routes are documented, while the cited carrier notices do not establish an accepted larger-cargo route for your unit. That does not mean a specialist route can never operate. Give the forwarder the plate dimensions, weight, photographs and transport configuration. Ask it to obtain written carrier acceptance and explain the loading, payload and securing limits that apply.

Can machinery move through Khor Fakkan to Jebel Ali?

As of October 2026, Dubai Customs Notice 03/2026 provides temporary secure bonded road movement for containers arriving at Khorfakkan or Fujairah and bound for Jebel Ali Port or Dubai free zones. The shipping line handles the road-leg manifest and delivery order; the consignee handles the declaration and clearance before release. Ask your clearing agent to check that the current notice and proposed container movement cover your shipment before relying on the route.

Can a machine land at Khor Fakkan and move to Abu Dhabi?

Do not extend a Dubai container arrangement to Abu Dhabi without a separate written answer. As of October 2026, Notice 03/2026 does not establish an equivalent bonded route for another emirate or a non-containerised machine. Give your clearing agent and the relevant emirate customs authority the machine, arrival port and final destination. Ask them to settle the movement and declaration path, then align it with the forwarder's acceptance and insurer's cover.

What should my forwarder confirm before I buy?

Ask for the actual unit's carrier acceptance, cargo classification, port and onward route. Include plate dimensions, weight, transport configuration, photographs, fuel level and battery details in the request. For the October 2026 position, general carrier notices do not settle an individual shipment or war-risk cover. Get the cargo insurer's separate written answer, and have your clearing agent check destination movement. Agree the UK seller's export evidence and invoice treatment before payment.

Can Euro Plant Finder handle UAE customs clearance?

Euro Plant Finder works on the sourcing and export side. We find the machine, check the seller, arrange inspection and coordinate the export documents with the seller and forwarder. The buyer's own UAE clearing agent files the import declaration and clears the goods. We coordinate with that agent so the machine details and export pack answer its requests, while the carrier decides cargo acceptance and the insurer decides cover.
